Appearance

C. maculipes is closely allied to C. fuscipennis. Both share the white border around the body with other Canthophorus, but have clear, sometimes even whitish rings on the tibia, whereas other members of the genus have entirely black legs.
The two can be separated from each other by fuscipennis being a tad lighter in colour, going on brownish black and more widened/rounded (vs, maculipes truly black and more parallel sided "rectangular"). Also, on maculipes the white rim is neatly delimited along the exocorium, whereas on fuscipennis it tends to clearly wash into the sides of the exocorium a bit.

Habitat

It prefers sunny, stony habitats that sport its host plant Centranthus ruber where it can be found on the flowers and fruits. Its lookalike Canthophorus maculipes prefers Centranthus angustifolius.
