Ruby brittle star

Ophioderma rubicundum

Description:
Long slender arms with a distinct central disc. The arms are covered with scales rather than spines. The color is red with cream bands along the arms. The central disc may be colored solid, or banded/mottled like the arms.
Size: up to 55 cm from arm tip to arm tip.

It was observed in a coral wall drop off, at probably about 25-30 m depth.

Distribution

Occasional all over the Caribbean.

Habitat

It lives along the outer edges of the reef, and forages at night.
Depth: ranges from 12 m down to 25 m.
