Opisthoncus polyphemus

Opisthoncus polyphemus

Opisthoncus polyphemus is a species of jumping spider found in Australia and Papua New Guinea.
Cyclops jumping spider dorsal I've shared a dorsal shot of this spider to highlight the white markings and clear black circles surrounding the eyes. These circles give the spider its common name because its eyes, embedded in these large black circle markings, seem much bigger than they are and our attention is drawn to them. Much like the single eye of the Cyclops draws our attention.

In Greek mythology, the giant Cyclops, also known as Polyphemus is the one-eyed son of Poseidon and Thoosa and this name has been included in the binomial.

NB. Only females of this species have these markings.
