  1. Why are there dead turtles in the cave? Posted 5 years ago
    1. When Jacque Cousteau featured the Turtle Cave in his documentary, he called it Turtle Tomb because he thought the Turtles goes there to die. There were a few skeletons, but not in the hundreds. Eventually, it was known that the skeletons there were of Turtles that drowned there. Those Turtles went to the cave at night to sleep, that could be for a few hours and when they wakes up, they will need to go to the surface to breath. Sometimes, they get lost in the cave and eventually drowns. The reason they could possibly get lost in the cave as it is a big cave with different chambers and some of the chambers or overhangs in the cave, which means those areas are the shallower part. In fact, the shallow parts of the overhangs near the ceiling can be as shallow as 5-6 meters.

There have been many divers who got lost in the cave and drown after running out of air. Currently, the cave is out of bound for regular recreational divers. Only adequately trained divers with special arrangements/guides are allowed to explore the cave. It is an amazing experience to explore the caves with its many chambers and structures. Not for everyone though. I will make a post of the turtle skeletons. There is also skeleton of dolphin and sailfish in there, put by divers, probably for the fun of it :D
