Brown Blob on Milkweed

I have no idea what this is - maybe some sort of larva? Or, a pupa? Scale insect?

Habitat: Milkweed in a meadow

  I wonder if it could be a beetle (like the one in the link) - but the pupal stage? Or else, perhaps a dipteran pupa. I should have picked it up, but it was small and seemed fragile. I didn't want to risk killing it. Posted 5 years ago

      Yes, I agree. It would look more pupa/larva-ish without that part. At this point, I think I'm leaning towards it being a scale insect...maybe. Posted 5 years ago
