    One of the wonders of childhood - before I learned what actually produced this, as a small child my imagination would run riot thinking of all the animals I knew that might enjoy spitting on leaves and for what purpose! Posted 6 years ago

"Philaenus spumarius", the meadow froghopper or meadow spittlebug, is a species of insect belonging to the spittlebug family Aphrophoridae. In Italy and America, it is economically important as one of the vectors of Pierce's Disease.
