Madagascar Rainforest Leech, Ranomafana, Madagascar On our guide's index finger, to given an indication of size. As this was the dry season, this was one of very few found. Seven years earlier we hiked Ranomafana in heavy rain during the wet season, and we had to stop and remove them every 10 minutes or so. 1. Yes, they're quite awful. They don't hurt in any way, it just creates tiny wounds that keep bleeding. Posted 6 years ago
      1. Yep. They are determined, but painless here too. I get them in swamps and ponds.

This one refused to pose for a photo unless I let it bite me:
Freshwater Leech - Phylum Annelida, Class Clitellata, Subclass Hirudinea I was using nets to collect critters (catch and release) from a pond with my kids this morning when I found this cute, little leech. It was apparently quite hungry and I couldn't get a shot without letting it attach to me. It was persistent.
Habitat: Small pond in a deciduous forest
