Ceratostoma foliatum, a collage. The top two photos show the rocksnail likely feeding on some barnacles. These two photos were taken a day apart... it didn&rsquo;t move much. The lower two photos show an uninhabited shell to show the three wing-like projections that are said to allow the snail to land properly if dislodged from a rock by a predator while underwater. The large &ldquo;tooth&rdquo; can be seen projecting from the aperture. <br />

  1. That is some excellent info, Gary! Thanks for taking the time to share it with us. Posted 6 years ago
    1. Thanks, Ferdy! These shells are quite the prize to find and even better to find a “live” one. At this time of the year they seem to be common. Their common name, never really thought of it till now, is quite descriptive; leafy varices and a horn-like “tooth”. Posted 6 years ago
      1. Good reminder for me to set the common name on the species record, as Wikipedia makes no mention of it. Done :) Posted 6 years ago
