ant queen unknown species I have not yet located this ant in my research as yet. I suspect a female camponotus singularis as the male generally has a longer abdomen. Singularis is common in this area. From research the image of camponotus castaneus is close, but I could be way off here.

The only solution is to find one and keep it in captivity and hope for a colony, but I have only seen this queen twice. The first was destroyed but managed a good shot of the head and wing. The second, I managed one shot and then it was gone.

Location is Bandung, West Java, Indonesia. Alongside a stream and paddy fields.
1. How can something this big and unusual be so difficult to identify!

I probably have upwards of 50 unidentified bugs in my collection, probably a lot more as I am just guessing. I really do try!

      1. So true! I often have insects that I'm certain will be easy to ID, only to find them nearly impossible. This ant seems so distinctive, but still hard to ID. I really struggle with ant IDs though. Posted 6 years ago

            1. I sent a FB to Tom Fayle. He had a look, but nothing sprang to mind. He needed a view of the petiole joint which I did not have. He has suggested Seiki Yamane, I have sent an email. Posted 6 years ago
