Unknown Fungus(?) I found this black stuff on a spruce tree branch in a meadow. It looks like fungus, but I&#039;m curious about what the blobs are. They might just be pitch. But, they could also be pitch masses caused by either a moth or midge. Some species that feed on conifer twigs overwinter or pupate inside pitch masses. I found this black stuff on a spruce tree branch in a meadow. It looks like fungus, but I'm curious about what the blobs are. They might just be pitch.
