Brown Frog - side view, Rio Ñambi, Colombia On our second and last night in Rio Ñambi, we ventured out into the forest for a night tour with a main focus on herping. With us was Miguel (don't know his last name), a local herping expert that would often assist biologists coming here.

From the very first minute it was easy to see he knows the forest very well. Also, he doesn't tread with care as we do in the night, instead he goes off-track far and fast, me struggling to keep up, stay up and not get my gear entangled in thick vegetation. Worth it though!

This will be the last night tour of the 2018 set.
1. Sounds so fun! Posted 6 years ago
    1. To me, nothing comes close to a jungle at night. Words just cannot express the atmosphere. Posted 6 years ago
      1. I can imagine! I love exploring and searching for insects at night. It has a completely different feel than during the daytime and awakens your senses. Posted 6 years ago
        1. Absolutely, yes. Two memorable examples:

Our first trip to Colombia, Santa Maria. We drive to a swamp in a valley. The full moon shone a weak light on the valley so you could actually see a few miles away. Below us a loud concert of millions of frogs and crickets. Unforgettable atmosphere.

A very close second: we drive at night on the plains in South Africa. For over an hour, in the complete middle of nowhere. The driver suddenly stops. Walks to the back of the jeep, and starts to prepare coffee and tea. Once everyone had their drink handed to them, he shuts the engine and all lights. Six people stood there and collectively froze. For the very first time in our lives, we experienced perfect darkness, and as a result, millions and millions of stars, a sea of them with no end. The echoes of the laughing hyenas made it complete.

          1. How incredible! I have a few memorable, nighttime nature moments as well. I worked at summer camps while I was in college, teaching canoeing and environmental science. It was in mid/northern Maine near Baxter State Park. I would go out in the middle of the night and lay on the docks to star gaze. There were no cities or even towns nearby and I saw more stars than I could ever imagine. Combined with the sounds of nature, it was intensely beautiful. A second experience that I'll never forget is watching the sunset while on top of Mauna Kea. We were above the clouds and the colors were so intense. The drive back down was pretty scary in the dark, but the experience was worth it!
Sunset Above the Clouds This is what sunset looks like on top of a volcano, whose summit is above the clouds! Mauna Kea is a dormant volcano on the island of Hawaii. It is 4,207 m above sea level. The summit lies above the tree line, and consists of mostly lava rock and alpine tundra, which is inhospitable to vegetation. Since the summit is above the inversion layer, most cloud cover lies below the summit. which ensures that the air on the summit is dry. The atmospheric conditions make it one of the best sites in the world for astronomical observation. However, the high elevation brings the risk of altitude sickness. Not to mention the incredibly steep road grade and overall inaccessibility, which make the volcano dangerous and summit trips difficult...But, very worthwhile for the adventurous! 1. Wonderful! You should cherish that you still live in a country where it's possible to get away from it all. Posted 6 years ago
              1. I definitely do, and wish you had the same! Posted 6 years ago
