Giant Bromelia? Rio Ñambi, Colombia

Smartphone photo of a very large Bromelia? plant growing near the lodge in Rio Ñambi, Colombia. Always a good idea to check the puddles of water inside, a common home for frogs.

I don't know anything about bromeliads, but it resembles Vriesea splendens. Maybe a similar species? Or, not?! Posted 6 years ago

  Leaf patterns surely look similar, yet leaf color looks different to me but I'm really not sure. Hard to match without it blooming. I do think we're in the right direction, thanks so much! Posted 6 years ago

Very difficult to identify. Aechmea sp. are also very similar. Aechmea chantinii, or Aechmea fasciata. Cultivated plants are usually small ones, but in the nature they could be giant. Posted 6 years ago
