“Scanning” or “Hunt Swimming”
This Harbour Seal, Phoca vitulina ssp. richardsi, is taking advantage of the clear shallow water. The photo was taken from our deck looking straight down. Since the eyes are on the top of the head slowly swimming upside down allows the seal to “scan” the bottom for prey. Sometimes with success!

The harbor seal, also known as the common seal, is a true seal found along temperate and Arctic marine coastlines of the Northern Hemisphere. The most widely distributed species of pinniped, they are found in coastal waters of the northern Atlantic and Pacific oceans, the Baltic and North Seas.
