  1. The photo is fine, Gary, and more than that...a wonderful insight into their behavior. Lucky you to have experienced this moment! Posted 6 years ago
    1. Thanks, and lucky enough to have the presence of mind to take a photo. The “scanning” or “hunt fishing” behaviour of our local Harbour seals is something that I was not aware of till recently. Still seems odd to see a seal “floating” on its back as if sunbathing when it’s actually looking for something to eat! Posted 6 years ago
      1. It reminded me of our cat, I thought it was just chilling! Posted 6 years ago
        1. It does come to mind. The one closer to the house... would have been great to have a stick and tickle the tummy!
“Scanning” or “Hunt Swimming” This Harbour Seal, Phoca vitulina ssp. richardsi, is taking advantage of the clear shallow water. The photo was taken from our deck looking straight down. Since the eyes are on the top of the head slowly swimming upside down allows the seal to “scan” the bottom for prey. Sometimes with success!<br />

    1. Thanks, Christine. Around here I never know what I’m going to see out the front window! Good thing there’s a camera sitting close to the front door. Posted 6 years ago

The harbor seal, also known as the common seal, is a true seal found along temperate and Arctic marine coastlines of the Northern Hemisphere. The most widely distributed species of pinniped, they are found in coastal waters of the northern Atlantic and Pacific oceans, Baltic and North seas.
