Bloodroot - Sanguinaria canadensis
A fragile spring flower that opens in full sunlight and then closes at night. The blood-red root was traditionally used as a dye in addition to many medicinal uses. But, it has toxic properties and is not recommended to be ingested.
*This photo shows the reddish orange goo that leaks out when the stem is cut. I tried to dig up the root with my fingers, but didn't have any luck. I'll have to be more prepared next time!
Habitat: Wooded wetland

"Sanguinaria canadensis" is a perennial, herbaceous flowering plant native to eastern North America. It is the only species in the genus "Sanguinaria", included in the family Papaveraceae, and most closely related to "Eomecon" of eastern Asia.
