Patterned rainfrog on fallen tree, Rio Ñambi, Colombia Opening up a new location: Rio Ñambi.

Setting foot in this forest is special. It's a stunning, dark, slimy pristine cloud forest. Together with our previous location, La Planada, Rio Ñambi used to be a famous birding hotspot in the 90s. Until around 2000, the FARC moved in. Coca was planted, violence spread, and the reserves were forced to close. Some 95% of the population of nearby towns were displaced.

The recent peace treaty cleared the path to reopen both reserves, and we attended both. In hindsight, I guess this explains why we were treated as if doing a state visit. Formalities, interviews, forced lectures on conservation programs, and being pulled into a local security council meeting. This is the turnaround point in history, where violence is replaced...with frogs! And many more cloud forest jewels.

Welcome to Rio Ñambi.
