
Grote's Pinion - Lithophane grotei
*This photo shows how cold the moth was before warming up in my hand - its antennae and legs are tucked in and its wings are flattened.
My first moth of the season! This moth was cold and it snuggled up in my hands for several minutes so it could warm up enough to fly.
Total length: ~25 mm. Gray forewings with pale gray shoulder patch. Orbicular spot was whitish gray and hourglass-shaped. It contained two darker gray spots. The reniform spots were indistinct and gray with a slight black dot.
Habitat: Attracted to a light in a rural area.
