Birch Tree (Betula sp.) With Damaged Bark I was puzzled by the appearance of the bark on this tree. I assumed the damage was caused by insects or fungus. But, unfortunately, it was caused by another parasite - humans.

The bark was harvested incorrectly - most likely at the wrong time of year, which left the tissue underneath to crack and die. When harvested correctly (early spring), it won't harm the cambium underneath.

*Thanks to Matt Borden for explaining this to me**

Habitat: On the edge of a meadow/forest at a nature center. They host children's nature programs and I have been consistently irritated by their staff's lack of knowledge and disregard for environmentally friendly practices.
