  1. Probably in the genus Physalis. Solanum carolinense doesn't have these papery sacks (derived from the calyx) like this. I'd need to see more of the leaves and maybe flower color to know which Physalis this might be as there are about 8 species possible in New England but it might be one of these: Physalis heterophylla, Physalis longifolia, Physalis philadelphica, Physalis pubescens. 1. 100 percent agree with Physalis sp. Looks just like "ground cherries" that my in-laws grow!
Do you think this is an escaped garden plant?

      1. @Lisa, it could be an escaped plant. I found it in a huge meadow at an audubon center. Posted 6 years ago
    2. Thanks so much! I'm happy to at least get it to species level! Unfortunately, I took this shot in late October, after the leaves and flowers were gone. Here's another shot that is slightly zoomed out, in case it helps:

      1. What about Physalis alkekengi? I've been perusing this meadow for years and have never noticed any flowers that look as cool as the ones for the species you mentioned above. But, I have seen white ones. Although, perhaps I just missed them....Hmm. I'll be on the lookout this coming season for sure. Posted 6 years ago
  2. The husk is the wrong shape for Physalis alkekengi. The closest match taking into account husk shape and what appears to be glandular pubescence on the stems might be Physalis pubescens. Posted 6 years ago
    1. Okay, thanks. I'm going to look for them this summer and see if I can find the flowers! Posted 6 years ago
  3. Late to the conversation, but here's some dried out specimens:

    1. Thanks for the link, Ferdy! Posted 6 years ago
  4. They are cape gooseberries or Peruvian ground cherries. I used to grow them in our garden Posted 6 years ago
    1. Thanks Ernst! I'm updating the info to indicate that they are Physalis sp. Posted 6 years ago
