Jungle Mycena, La Isla Escondida, Colombia

Happy new year!

We found this series of small mycena fungi growing through a fallen leaf on the forest floor of La Isla Escondida and used it as a subject for creative lighting. The approach is off-camera flash where our guide was holding a single flash unit directly above the subject whilst I took the shot. The idea was to give just enough light to "fill" the cups without overexposing it. As these cups are tiny and white and partly translucent, it only needs a tiny bit of light. So it's a simple trial and error approach where the unit was held at a changing distance until it was right.

The result is as expected quite dark, it's best viewed full screen and preferably on a high contrast (OLED) screen.
