Scorpion under UV light, La Isla Escondida, Colombia
A bucket list item completed! We specifically bought a small UV torch beforehand to try and light up a scorpion like this under UV light.
As for the making of: you need to shut down all regular lights, as the slightest shine of a regular light will ruin the effect (this scorpion in reality in brownish/orange). With only UV light shining on the subject, capturing it was still trickier than expected. The UV light was very weak, therefore I had to raise ISO to 6400, and that still granted a slow shutter speed. Furthermore, the torch had to be kept extremely close to the scorpion. Consumer UV torches being weak is mostly for safety reasons. Don't look into the beam or shine it at others!
Besides creating this cool effect, the torch is also useful for tracking. This brown scorpion amidst piles of dead leafs would normally be impossible to track at night, yet it sticks out like a sore thumb with the light.
