Wasp - genus Ephutomorpha The common name is velvet ant, but it is infact a species of was with the females being wingless. Observed her on a sandy patch with many small native bees burrowing tunnels in the sand . I at first was shire that it was one of the bees and don’t know how I didn’t notice that she had no wings. Also looked like an ant. Australia,Geotagged,Spring Click/tap to enlarge

    1. Yes Ferdy you are right this is a strange looking thing .I have to embarrass my selfs and have to admit that I made a very big mistake. I really have no idea what I was thinking of , but now I know that this is not a bee , it can’t be as it for one has no wings. It looks like an ant and is called a Velvet ant . This also is not correct . It is in fact a wingless female wasp and the genus appears to be - Ephutomorpha , but can’t work out the species. So that is it don’t ask me to explain it how I confused this one. Posted 6 years ago
      1. Don't beat yourself up over it, Ernst! It's perfectly normal to take multiple steps for such a puzzling species. Posted 6 years ago
