Spring Rainfrog, La Isla Escondida, Colombia A beautiful and endangered species of rain frog, found during a night tour. Wikipedia mentions it is endemic to Ecuador. This is possibly inaccurate, if you consider how close to the Ecuadorian border we are (see geotag).<br />

  1. Unfortunately I'm not enough of an expert to identify most Pristimantis frogs with much certainty. There are so many! Amphibiaweb lists 203 species (!!) of Pristimantis just in Colombia (!!!).

Yours does look pretty much like P. crenunguis, but lots of Pristimantis look very similar, so that's not enough to allow much confidence. And while your location is very close to the Ecuador border, the known range of P. crenunguis is not that close to the Colombia border, at least if the map on the IUCN Red List site is very accurate (https://www.iucnredlist.org/species/56530/11493259).

You might have already done this, but it's worth glancing through the list of Pristimantis known from Colombia in Amphibiaweb (https://amphibiaweb.org/cgi/amphib_query?max=200&orderbyaw=Genus%2Bspecies&include_synonymies=Yes&show_photos=Yes&where-genus=Pristimantis&rel-isocc=occurs+in&where-isocc=Colombia), to see if any of them catch your eye as potential matches. There are a bunch without photos, but most of them do have photos.

    1. Thanks, John! I was hoping it was a done deal, even more so with the belly shot, but time and time again herping shows to be so difficult. I'll go through that list and will also check with the local guide at the time what he thinks. Leaving this ID in the meanwhile, but may be removed. Posted 6 years ago
      1. You were smart to get a belly shot. Those are often critical for distinguishing Pristimantis species. It could be that someone pretty knowledgeable about Colombian frogs could ID yours definitively with that belly shot along with the other photos. (Unfortunately I do not fit in that category!) 1. No worries, John, I realize that for some frogs, I'm basically asking for the impossible. I'm too naive in that sense. As to not bother experts continuously and I have many more frogs coming, I'm now saving up unidentified ones in a list:

Currently, the set also contains frogs from the previous two years, many you already had looked at, but this list will grow with this year's findings, slowly but surely.

          1. I made a bookmark for this list and will try to remember to see if I can help with it from time to time. Feel free to pester me any time, also! Posted 6 years ago
            1. That is so nice of you, thanks John! Posted 6 years ago
