  1. Sugian, Lethocerus americanus is described as being native to the US and Canada. Did you use any reference to come to this ID? Posted 6 years ago
    1. I just looked at the image of Giant Water Bug in Google Search. It was shown the image is similar to the one founded in my home backyard. Google mentioned the Giant Water Bug as Lethocerus Americanus. So if you can find the correct ID please feel free to correct it. Thanks n regards Posted 6 years ago
      1. Similar looking does not means its the same species. At a minimum, you should always take into account the distribution of the species. Posted 6 years ago
        1. Once again, I'm not a scientist. So please correct it if the ID is wrong. I'm just a retired Civil Engineer who love macro photography particularly insects & flowers n fortunately I live in a country side which a lot of insects in my backyard. Tq Posted 6 years ago
          1. I'm not a scientist either Sugian, it's no excuse to not try and get the correct species. It's ok to not find it, but it's not ok to just guess one in a way that is almost always incorrect. If you do that, you're causing moderators a lot of work in cleaning up the species ID. Moderators are not paid, they do this in their free time. It's the responsibility of the person taking the photo to try and get the species ID. It's ok to not find it, but just searching on family + location is the bare minimum I believe everyone is able to do. And by not doing it, you're asking your peers to do it for you.

If you're unwilling to put some work in getting the species ID, I still respect that. But in that case I want to ask you to stop identifying them at all, because an empty ID is less work for moderators than a wrong ID.

I hope you take my criticism well, because I respect you and love your observations. But I also need to be frank that you're causing a lot of extra work that seems unnecessary.

            1. Ok noted. Sorry, if you said the moderators are not paid then it would be the same to me hihihihihi.... I posted the images i have taken just to help this organization and others to knowing about the various insects in my country for free too hihihihi. As I said, I posted my images/pictures to some numbers group of macro photography (all free) is just to fill my spare time during my retirement/pension as I love macro photography. From now on i will keep the species ID empty. Thanks Posted 6 years ago
              1. Thank you, Sugian <3 We would love to help with your IDs if you cannot find them! We look forward to seeing more of your lovely photos! Posted 6 years ago, modified 6 years ago
              2. It's not about the photo, Sugian, we love them and want them. What I mean with "not paid" is that by supplying incorrect species, we have a lot of extra work that is better spent on something else. As Lisa has suggested, would be a great compromise to not identify species, yet to put your thoughts on species in the photo's description instead. Posted 6 years ago
          2. I think it is more than adequate (and easier for moderators) to just leave the species ID empty if you are unsure. You are more than welcome to make guesses within your post, and we can go from there! Posted 6 years ago
            1. Thanks Lisa Posted 6 years ago
