Purple-red russula
These were apparently very popular with the critters... this one was in the best shape of all those that I found and it was pretty munched on the other side. The others that were further up were all quite ragged. Too bad.. the color was so intense, I'd have liked to have seen a really perfect one.
White stem/gills - no discernible odor
CAP up to 10.5 cm, fleshy, medium violet at center, grayish purple at edge, viscid drying pruinose, margin grooved, cuticle peeling; flesh white, soft. ODOR none. TASTE acrid. GILLS white becoming pale ecru. STEM white. SPORE PRINT light yellow. HABITAT Douglas-fir, sometimes pine. REMARKS The type locality for this species is Seattle, and Burlingham notes that is abundant in this area in October.
