Purple-red russula These were apparently very popular with the critters... this one was in the best shape of all those that I found and it was pretty munched on the other side. The others that were further up were all quite ragged. Too bad.. the color was so intense, I&#039;d have liked to have seen a really perfect one.<br />

CAP up to 10.5 cm, fleshy, medium violet at center, grayish purple at edge, viscid drying pruinose, margin grooved, cuticle peeling; flesh white, soft. ODOR none. TASTE acrid. GILLS white becoming pale ecru. STEM white. SPORE PRINT light yellow. HABITAT Douglas-fir, sometimes pine. REMARKS The type locality for this species is Seattle, and Burlingham notes that is abundant in this area in October.
