    1. Around 5,000 feet. Pika cannot survive temperatures over around 25.5C (80F) for very long - only hours, so they tend to be found fairly high up in the mountains, where it rarely reaches those highs. They can cope by hiding away in their talus caves, where it is cooler, during the hottest parts of the day, but it limits their ability to gather and store food (they do not hibernate, so they have to spend the short summers packing enough away to last the entire time until the snow melts again the next year), so they tend to not be found where summer days can become very warm. The American pika , a diurnal species of pika, is found in the mountains of western North America, usually in boulder fields at or above the tree line. They are herbivorous, smaller relatives of rabbits and hares.
