Waxy Caps - Hygrocybe sp.
These mushrooms were small: 2-3 cm tall. Caps were conical and red with yellow centers. They were slightly fuzzy with what looked like white hairs. Stipes were similar to the cap in color. The gills were yellow and widely spaced.
Habitat: They were growing on the ground in a mixed forest, but in an area with lots of oak.

I plan on hiking alone again tomorrow or Wednesday, but I haven't chosen a location yet. I got a bit panicky on my solo hike last week as there were lots of "waspy" locations (so many hollowed out stumps)! Posted 7 years ago
