  1. Have you considered the Pseudomethoca genus? Some species in there look kind of similar. Posted 7 years ago
    1. Yep. I went through the galleries at BugGuide, but I didn't see anything close to a match in that genus. Timulla was the closest I could find, but I'm definitely no expert! Posted 7 years ago
      1. I cant match that little white triangle on the abdomen with anything. It's a little punk, that's what it is :) Posted 7 years ago
        1. Yes! There were several of them running around! I think it was you who previously gave me the advice to shoot ahead of them when trying to get photos? It seemed to work out a little bit better on these shots, but I didn't continue to try to get more images after a Bald Faced Hornet popped itself out of a hole in the ground next to it! It was probably hunting other insects, but I didn't want to risk another sting! Posted 7 years ago
        2. ID confirmed as Timulla dubitata, female :) Posted 6 years ago
          1. Excellent, congrats! Posted 6 years ago
  2. Great shot! Looks similar to the one I took last year but it yours appears to have a different head shape and thorax:

Velvet Ant - Timulla vagans Saw this 'ant' on a wall - I know my South European ant species quite well but didn't recognise this one at all. Then it dawned on me...what if this isn't an ant, but a velvet ant or wingless wasp! A quick google search later and it turns out it is indeed a velvet ant, this is the female and apparently she packs a severe punch when it comes to her sting - not as bad as the 'cow killer' velvet ant though ;) Geotagged,Greece,Summer,Timulla vagans,Velvet Ant

They are beautiful, even if they do pack a punch!
