Snowberry Clearwing (Hemaris diffinis) Resting on Cyperus sp., but was initially nectaring on Buttonweed (Diodia virginiana). This was photographed after the sunshine came out after a long week of heavy rains!

The Snowberry Clearwing is a hummingbird mimic and even emits a similar "humming" noise whilst beating its wings. One of the proposed reasons for this mimicry is the avoidance of predation by insectivorous birds. Being diurnal puts this moth even more at risk for predation, so mimicking a hummingbird would prove advantageous!
1. Thank you! This shot was my favorite of the set as well!

Now if I can just bring to life my dream of handling one of these!

      1. Yes! I did this last summer :). I went out super early to a spot with lots of bee balm, which these moths love. I looked around and found one that was still waiting to warm up for the day! Here's a shot of the one I handled:
Hummingbird Clearwing Moth This moth looked like it was about 100 years old. I spotted it this morning resting on bee balm in a garden. Geotagged,Hemaris,Hemaris thysbe,Hummingbird Clearwing,Hummingbird Clearwing Moth,Summer,United States, moth

    2. P.S. Of course my yard is exploding with so many moths the week after Moth Week! They didn't get the memo in time I guess? Posted 7 years ago
      1. Haha, what's wrong with them?! There aren't too many here right now, but I am still seeing some each night! Posted 7 years ago
