Snowberry Clearwing (Hemaris diffinis) Resting on Cyperus sp., but was initially nectaring on Buttonweed (Diodia virginiana). This was photographed after the sunshine came out after a long week of heavy rains!

The Snowberry Clearwing is a hummingbird mimic and even emits a similar "humming" noise whilst beating its wings. One of the proposed reasons for this mimicry is the avoidance of predation by insectivorous birds. Being diurnal puts this moth even more at risk for predation, so mimicking a hummingbird would prove advantageous!
1. Great catch! Posted 7 years ago
    1. Thank you! This truly made my day/week! I've been stuck in the house with all of this rain. As soon as the sun came I out, I ran outside with my camera. This was one of this first things I saw! They are notoriously hard to approach, so I feel lucky to have gotten this close! Posted 7 years ago
      1. Send us a bit of rain! Here in Europe and in Belgium we are going through an unusual hot and dry summer of 30+Celsius. I think it may be better to see some insects but I don't dare to go outside these days, at least until the evening :-D
Hummingbird moths are also one of my favorites! Not easy to find and very difficult to photograph with all the constant hovering. So, I understand why you are happy! :-)
