Snowberry Clearwing (Hemaris diffinis)
Resting on Cyperus sp., but was initially nectaring on Buttonweed (Diodia virginiana). This was photographed after the sunshine came out after a long week of heavy rains!
The Snowberry Clearwing is a hummingbird mimic and even emits a similar "humming" noise whilst beating its wings. One of the proposed reasons for this mimicry is the avoidance of predation by insectivorous birds. Being diurnal puts this moth even more at risk for predation, so mimicking a hummingbird would prove advantageous!

Hummingbird moths are also one of my favorites! Not easy to find and very difficult to photograph with all the constant hovering. So, I understand why you are happy! :-) Posted 7 years ago
