White-Tailed Deer (Odocoileus virginianus) - Doe and Her Fawn An intimate moment between a mother and child! A shot of the fawn nursing! Unfortunately, I only had my macro lens with me during this hike, so the pictures were not as wonderful as I would have liked!<br />

  1. Love this shot <3 Posted 7 years ago
    1. My friend, Pratima, got MUCH better shots than me! I was regretting not bringing my other lenses! Gahhh! It was such a special moment! Posted 7 years ago
      1. Your shot is good though! I like that it is a bit far off and obfuscated (this word if for Ferdy, if he sees this)...It adds to the intimacy of the moment, in my opinion. They are nicely framed by the hole in the trees, by the water....lovely! Posted 7 years ago
        1. Yes, the de-obfuscator was not needed in this instance.
@Lisa: it's a really great feeling when being still in the field for a while and being rewarded by such a moment. It's like seeing the pure natural moment as the deer is likely not aware of you.

          1. It was wonderful while it lasted!

Unfortunately my friend and I (despite being very quiet) drew the attention of a couple of other people (this is a wetland trail just outside of metro Atlanta). They proceeded to let out lots of loud OOOOHS & AHHHs...which then startled the pair and caused the nursing session to end. :(

            1. HEY YOU! WHAT IS IT THAT YOU'RE SEEING WITH YOUR CAMERA!?! WHY ARE YOU SO QUIET!?!? HELLO?!?! Posted 7 years ago
              1. Exactly! People are ridiculous. They just don't know the meaning of "tread gently." Posted 7 years ago
              2. LOL.... I try to make it a point to go to places that have fewer people, but I get this often enough... WHAT ARE YOU LOOKING AT.... ummmm well nothing now, it's run away... Posted 7 years ago
                1. I usually do the same, but my friend wanted me to go to her hiking spot (she lives in the city) for this occasion. I much prefer VERY rural, isolated areas! Posted 7 years ago
                  1. I avoid popular spots too, but this summer, it seems like there are swarms of kids everywhere. Even Audubon centers around here have started summer camps. So, there is now more trash, trampled vegetation, and noise nearly everywhere. It's nice for the kids to get outside, but it makes for a horrible experience for hikers. I encountered a particularly loud hoard of kids yesterday, and my son said, "I hope they aren't hoping to see any wildlife because they have scared away everything that moves, including us." Haha, so true. Posted 7 years ago
