Potter Wasp Nest - Eumenes sp. Female wasps make conspicuous, aerial mud nests attached to twigs or other objects. It was close to 15 mm wide.

When first built, the nest has an opening, which makes it look like a pot or jug. The female deposits egg(s) on walls of the pot, provisions it with moth and beetle larvae, and then seals it with a final mud pellet. The larvae will hatch, eat the food provisions, and create a tiny exit hole through which to leave the nest once mature. **This shot shows the inside of the nest - I'm guessing it's the remains of food and exuvia, etc.**

There were three of these nests on my deck chairs. I left them there to mature, and took them down after the wasps had matured and exited.
