Ambiguous Moth - Lascoria ambigualis Total length: about 12 mm. Forewings were violet gray with straight AM line that was edged in black. Median and postmedian lines were scalloped. This moth was a male, which is indicated by the black spots in the notch midway along the outer margin. Reniform spots are oblique, white crescents, which were mostly rubbed off on this moth.<br />

    1. Thanks, I liked the subtle lavender! Posted 7 years ago
  2. It's too bad this species name is already taken. I was hoping to "discover" a new species moth and name it like this. Then, when the scientific community asks for a description, I'd just state the appearance is "Ambiguous". Posted 7 years ago
    1. Lol, I know - isn’t the name ridiculous and funny. You could use any of the following, unless they too are already taken: ambivalent, inconclusive, uncertain, or vague... Posted 7 years ago
      1. Thanks for the ideas. I once had the idea to "purchase" a name to associate it with JD. Yes, you can actually do that. Unfortunately, species were not that interesting and naming has a lot of restrictions. Posted 7 years ago
        1. I had no idea such a thing was possible. Posted 7 years ago
          1. It's not a general possibility. This was a group of dutch enthomologist active in Papau New Guinea. They regularly discover large quantities of undescribed species. To fund their expeditions, they release some of those species and will allow you to name them, for a price, and within the rules.

So you can't call it the Coca Cola beetle :) Also, the specimens were usually pure black tiny beetles, nothing memorable.

            1. Eh. Interesting concept. Too bad there were no green dragons available to name. Posted 7 years ago
              1. Heh yes, I had the exact same train of thought. I was hoping to name a very cool creature something like "dragonicus". It was not meant to be, a bit naive perhaps. Posted 7 years ago
  3. This looks a little like one I've been seeing this month. I'll have to get back to those photos and compare. Posted 7 years ago
