Andean cock-of-the-rock - portrait in backlight, Jardin, Colombia This is Henriette's favorite bird so we went to a place that gives really good odds of seeing them: the cock-of-the-rock reserve in Jardin. This reserve is simply a large forested garden operated by a nice old lady. There are no fences or nets, so the birds chose to be here. On any given day, you can see as little as 1 or as many as 30 cock-of-the-rocks. Almost all are males which are known for their loud and extravagant courtship displays.

I think we saw about 8 males, and no females. It's a very fun, loud and entertaining sight to see these males go nuts. They are constantly head-banging and loudly calling. They are of course all known for their appearance, in particular the disc-like crest that gives the illusion of the bird having a protruded head, and no beak. I'll be sharing many shots, get ready for lots of RED!
Andean cock-of-the-rock - perched, Jardin, Colombia This is Henriette's favorite bird so we went to a place that gives really good odds of seeing them: the cock-of-the-rock reserve in Jardin.

1. So cool! I love the lighting and how you can see right through its bouffant to see the shape of it's head and bill. Very nice! Posted 5 years ago
1. Thanks so much! Glad you looked past the insane ISO 12800 :) Posted 5 years ago
1. I hadn’t noticed that!!! Posted 5 years ago
1. It was a very dark forest, had to go this high :) Posted 5 years ago
1. It's completely amazing that your camera can go so high!! Posted 5 years ago
1. It can do double this amount, but I normally try to not go above 6400 :) Posted 5 years ago, modified 5 years ago
1. I don't think I've ever used an ISO that high, but am intrigued to try. The quality in your shot is really good considering the ISO is so high - not grainy or too noisy, like I would expect. Posted 5 years ago
1. In my macro shoots I usually use flash, so my ISO is as low as 64 (yes, below 100) and almost never goes higher on my recent shots.

Birding is an entirely different matter though. I have a 80-400mm f/5.6, with an extender it becomes a f/8. To make matters worse, birds need a high shutter speed, say 1/400s or up to 1/1000s for in-flight shots. It's then inevitable for ISO to become sky high. I typically use auto ISO where I set the minimum shutter speed, and since the aperture is fixed, the camera will then dynamically assign ISO high enough to meet those constraints. So for birding, I don't manage ISO at all.

The above image is super noisy when seen at 100% and without post processing. The small size and some noise reduction does wonders. Even more in this case the subject itself. The subject is so overwhelming that most would not see how the background is almost like water color, due to strong noise reduction.

And finally, yes I should mention that the D850 is a mind blowing camera, I'm a total fanboy.

1. Definitely sounds like an incredible camera! You are inspiring me to learn more about digital photography! Ironically, I started college 20+ years ago in art school with a photography major. But, that was back in the days of film. My digital camera has so many features that I have yet to learn about and I only do minimal photo processing in photoshop - both because I haven't had/taken the time to learn. But, I'm inspired by your knowledge and skill :) Posted 5 years ago
1. For what it's worth, your photos are incredible and even more so knowing you did minimal processing. They are sharp, have the correct depth of field, are well composed, and correctly exposed. So you take photos extremely well, and that needs little processing. Looks like your old skill translates very well into the digital era. Posted 5 years ago
2. I was just browsing some lists and saw the "gallito de roca"! I love this bird since I was a child. I hope to see it one day myself in some forest. Lovely spotting, Ferdy! :-) Posted 2 years ago
