Whitman's Jumping Spider (Phidippus whitmani) Early instar Salticid on leaf litter in a valley in a dense mixed hardwood/coniferous forest in NW Georgia (Gordon County), US. May 19, 2018.

This particular species of jumping spider exhibits Batesian mimicry. It effectively mimics mutillid wasps (commonly known as "red velvet ants"). They are often found in similar habitats as the mutillids, so this provides them with some protections from predators.
1. Hitting a sweet spot with me, my favorite arthropods! I read they mimic velvet ants, indeed the photo showing the abdomen does resemble one. Posted 7 years ago
    1. Indeed! They are mimics!
I need to write a description for sure. Salticids are one of my faves too! I just want to snuggle them!

      1. Pseudeuophrys lanigera One of my favorite jumping spiders. This picture was also (like my previous upload) made with a sunny bright blue sky as a background so even with a flash used, the background with a reversed lens doesn't always have to be pitch black.
