Psathyrella - Psathyrella sp.
Mushrooms growing in a cluster. Each fungus has a deep brown cap with cream centers (smaller specimens sometimes lacking this coloration). Cap texture smooth but slightly viscid. Stipe is smooth and cream to white, while gills are cream to tan and slightly decurrent. Spore print is dark brown.
Psathyrella are saprobic mushrooms with dark spore prints. They are often hygrophanous, as they are prone to color changes at different moisture levels (note the two tones in these specimens). Viewing of microscopic features is often required for a proper species identification of this genus.
Habitat:
Located at the bottom of a ridge in a dense mixed hardwood forest. In a very moist area, growing on/around a highly rotted log.
