Mating Crane fly pair (Tipulidae) I saw this mating crane fly pair when i was on trip in The Streekbos. unfortunatly there was a small twigg like thing in the way, while i found this the best composition. when i tried removing it, the pair flew away. so it isnt the best because of it, but i still wanted to show you guys. as i found it special and quite strange that they mate like this. as always feedback is welcome, as i am still a beginner and learning. 1. Rudolph, I think you did a good job of taking a step back here. The twig does not bother me at all. To me, the focus of this photo is on the behavior of the subjects, which is interesting. I did not know they mate this way either, looks somewhat similar to dragonflies. Thus, your photo show interesting behavior and is educational, which is one of the main goals of this website.

To add to that, crane flies really could use some help regarding education. Often mistaken to be giant mosquito and scary looking, they really are quite harmless and very poor and clumsy fliers.

    1. thank you Ferdy, for the compliment. i am happy that the twigg doesnt seem so intrusive as i thought it was. i didnt even thought about this photo as being educational. indeed, alot of people think wrong about crane flies when it comes to how good they can fly. and some people even think they are more dangerous than the normal mosquito. while they are indeed pretty harmless. i am happy to have made an educational photo about a pretty cool, but harmless crane fly pair.
