Desert puffballs You'd think fungi would be scarce in an environment that often gets less than 8" of rain in any given year... but I always see some mushrooms when I'm out in Eastern Washington. What I don't find is much if any information about them... aside from a few highly distinctive species that have caught the eye of mycologists, it doesn't seem like people find it an area that they want to study. 1. yeah - I came across the bovistas and they definitely crack the same and I think that genus is certainly on the right track. I've been trying to see if they occur this far west or not. My more local mushroom site only lists Bovista pila, but they definitely focus on fungi from the west (and wet) side of the state. Posted 8 years ago, modified 8 years ago
      1. I was going to say it is time for your first microscope, but given your profession you may already have one hehe. Posted 8 years ago
        1. I don't have one - I had a cheap one as a kid :p and at my last job I had a beautiful high end Nikon microscope with a full complement of Zeiss objectives... having to leave that baby behind was my one regret about leaving that job.. I wonder if they ever got it adequately set up to convert it to digital. Yes.. it was back in the old days of film cameras. I was just experimenting with putting a digital camera on it when I quit. The focal plane of the digital camera was in quite a different place and it wasn't working so well... Posted 8 years ago
