Horvathiolus guttatus is a small red and black bug in the family Lygaeidae. The genus was split off from the similar looking genus Melanocoryphus in 1965 by Josifov and contains some twenty very similar species, mostly concentrated around the Mediterranean, that are often tricky to identify due to intra specific variability.

Some Horvathiolus sp. - will try for a species ID later (possibly gibbicollis?). Where in Portugal was this?
One neat reference is here: http://heteropteradudes.blogspot.nl/2011/02/la-dupla-de-horvathiolus_28.html Posted 8 years ago, modified 8 years ago

I have assembled some resources for the genus here: https://observation.org/soort/info/703839?lang=en
The (French language) section for Horvathiolus in the Faune the France (Pericart, 1998) agrees largely with the German text at the time of erection of the genus (Josifov, 1965). If you would rather read German I can forward the PDF to you.
The species has been created so this photo may be identified (WildFlower?)
Tonight I may enter some more info for the species page here, but I have to other things today first.
