Small frog on big leaf, Santa María, Colombia My theory for now is Centrolene sp. Hard to see on this photo, but this one has bright infrequent yellow spots on its back. Unfortunately, that's hardly a unique feature. Boyacá,Colombia,Santa María,South America,World Click/tap to enlarge

  1. Definitely a glass frog (family Centrolenidae). But there are many species in Colombia that look similar, so it will be difficult to narrow down. Here's a list of all the species in Colombia, according to amphibiaweb.org: http://amphibiaweb.org/cgi/amphib_query?max=200&orderbyaw=Family&include_synonymies=Yes&show_photos=Yes&where-family=Centrolenidae&where-ordr=any&rel-isocc=occurs+in&where-isocc=Colombia

There are even multiple species with yellow spots on the back, including at least Centrolene savagei, Sachatamia albomaculata, and Sachatamia punctulata. Maybe your memories of the details of this frog's appearance will allow you to narrow this down?

    1. Thank you John. I did browse that list before and concluded there were too many similar looking species to make a match. So it was a long shot, and I'll accept that this one is too difficult to narrow down to a single species. Glass frog does already help a lot! Posted 8 years ago
