  2. Beautiful! What is the average size of this species? Great capture! Posted 8 years ago
    1. Howdy,
This specimen was around 4mm, see image here:

I've added some text in the species account that states "3,2-4,7mm"

Of course literature sizes will always vary a little. Cobben (1985) presents size ranges of 3,2-4,1mm for males and 3,6-4,6mm for females (my image shows a female), but also states that within this total range the animals from Europe's west coast are on average clearly larger than individuals from Britain and from the Black Sea area.
      I've linked some literature here:

Halosalda lateralis is a Shore Bug (Saldidae) that mostly lives in the saline sandy environments along the maritime coastline, but occasionally also inland (rarely even non-saline). Several hours of inundation can be sustained while holding on to a submerged plant, by going into a stasis and thanks to special structures on the dorsum, under the hemelytra that provide a means of taking in some oxygen under water.
