  1. I recognize this frog's shape as genus Dendropsophus, but I haven't tried to track down all the potential matches in this area. Perhaps Dendropsophus columbianus? Posted 8 years ago
    1. Thank you once again, John. Your candidate seems likely based on this being in the Andes, and it being in a pond/wetland, which is described as the distribution. As for appearance, reference photos show a high variety but this one is quite a look-a-like:

      1. The detail that worries me a little about this ID is that your frog has a light line along the ridge at the top of the snout, and most if not all of the photos I saw of Dendropsophus columbianus don't have that light line. So I'm still sure that it's Dendropsophus but not sure about the species. (The light line could just be a variable characteristic in this species, I just don't know.) Posted 8 years ago
        1. Interesting remark. From the list you shared, this one seems to have the light line:
          http://amphibiaweb.org/cgi/amphib_query?where-genus=Dendropsophus&where-species=garagoensis

Interestingly, it mentions Boyacá, Colombia as distribution, where I took the photo. I checked for some more reference photos online to find a more red variation, and found this:

Please know that I'm still only guessing, I don't know how to come to a conclusion on it.

          1. It is basically impossible to be certain unless you have a key or complete guide to all of the possible candidates that is written by an expert. And even then you often need to check some surface (like the throat or belly) that you might not have photos of. So there is a lot of guessing involved! I personally think that there's no harm in guessing as long as make it clear that you aren't certain. This puts a stake in the ground and gives others a chance to come along later and provide more information. Posted 8 years ago
            1. Thanks, and agreed. I will keep your original suggestion as-is, and since this thread is preserved, anyone who has clues for another species is welcome. Posted 8 years ago
            2. I have another tricky one:

Tiny frog on leaf, Santa María, Colombia Orange head and body, dark eyes, greenish translucent legs. Boyacá,Colombia,Hypsiboas punctatus,Polka-dot tree frog,Santa María,South America,World

I tried amphibiaweb but am struggling to break it down to a smaller group, given its pretty generic look. Any thoughts?
