1. That is one stunning beetle! How would you name it? The patterns looks very specific, perhaps you see something in it ;) Posted 8 years ago
    1. This beetle is female so dissection will not help. I will try to observe egg laying and larvae but there is little material to compare. When I describe the group as a whole, I could suggest it is new but beetles are so variable and there is so little data. I like the reference to candy. This beetle is the closest. but is not alpine.
Paropsisterna_sp16 An undetermined and scarce beetle with red head and anterior pronotum.
The antennae are testaceous and should not be confused with P. fastidiosa which are black.
The coloration of the 'cell' of the elytra is variable, from green to red, which maybe even teneral.
Next time I shall test that theory.
There always a diagonal red remnant on the base of the elytra, from humeral callous (shoulder) to the suture, Australia,Geotagged,Paropsisterna,Spring

It has not been matched yet with any previously described species and so remains without a name. Being common, it certainly is likely to have been described but the descriptions are extremely brief and might easily refer to other beetles. Each discovery brings one answer and two more questions.

  2. Hi Martin,
Today I've had a few screens full of your (tagged) images of Paropsisterna and Paropsis open on my screen for a long time and just marvelled at them while passing by it doing other chores. Gorgeous little critters and a fantastic collection of sharp photographs with crisp colours. Pure eye candy! Thank you so much for sharing :o)

    1. Thanks for your compliment. That is exactly what they are for. Your images are stunning also.
Science needs passion just as art does. Fortunately this is very easy in biology.

      1. And to add: I'm extremely happy with insect geeks like the two of you :) Posted 8 years ago
