CAP 4-10 cm across, dull violet-gray with a vinaceous tint, to purple or violet; slimy and somewhat streaked beneath slime, bald or nearly so; flesh cap-colored to pallid, when cut or bruised changing slowly to violaceous purple. GILLS adnexed, close; colored as cap when young, purplish or violet when bruised. STIPE 6-11 cm x 1.0-2 cm at top, club-shaped; colored as cap or a brighter lilac; dry, silky, fibrillose with the pallid veil remnants, staining purplish when handled.
