Three Red Spots

Close-up of Cicada with 3 red spots on its head

  1. I had to look this up, but it turns out that the red spots are in fact eyes:

"Cicadas like most insects have three primitive eyes or ocelli as well as the two large compound eyes. The ocelli are sensitive to light and in conjunction with the compound eyes, they provide the insect with two distinct types of vision."

    1. Wow, Ferdy! And thanks for looking further into it.
I never thought that those red-spots are the eyes too.
