    1. Thanks! Long-tailed hummingbirds really are in a class of their own. Posted 9 years ago
      1. Coming back to this old comment...it seems there's only 3 species of long-tailed ones. I just added the 2nd:

Violet-tailed sylph at feeder, male Photographed at the feeder near the Montezuma lodge on the first night of our arrival. I'd of course prefer to separate the bird from the feeder, but in this case it's the only good shot showing this species' awesome color. This species occurs in the Western Andes. The long tail indicates that this is the male. Now please tell me when you plan to capture the 3rd ;)

        1. Haha well done! Hmmm but it looks like that 3rd species is endemic to Venezuela. It's a country I'd love to visit but now doesn't seem like the best time to do so...
On the other hand, while there are only 3 species in this genus, the Andean trainbearers (which I've seen) and the Jamaican streamertails (which I hope to see someday) aren't too shabby in the tail department either! And of course, in my opinion the ultimate Grail in the hummingbird family, the marvellous spatuletail is in a class all of its own...

          1. Oh my! I've been staring myself blind too much on the Colombian hummingbirds to have missed those. Looks like we have a way to go :) Posted 7 years ago
            1. Well it is the second most speciose bird family! I doubt I'll manage to see all 350 of them in my lifetime, but I certainly want to see as many of them as possible. Posted 7 years ago
