1. Are you sure about your species request "Hirudinaria manillensis"? Wikipedia mentions its a species occurring in Mexico. Posted 9 years ago
1. On second thought... no. On https://taxo4254.wikispaces.com/Hirudinaria+manillensis it looks similar but it's much larger. Maybe it's Haemadipsa sp. or I can just let someone else ID it. It's a common leech but I've never bothered to find out its name. Posted 9 years ago
1. That's ok, thanks. Posted 9 years ago
2. Hahaha I remember putting on a headscarf and long sleeves in Gunung Stong NP because they were everywhere!!
Here in Costa Rica we have lots of ticks and chiggers to annoy you.
Guess what I have posted one of those beauties here.

1. Yeah, they're just about everywhere. You need to check for leeches everytime you take a break! Your tick/chigger never made it on the page though. Posted 9 years ago
1. here you go :
Amblyomma cajennense - the photographer's enemy Look what I pulled off my leg today, luckily not fat yet. These ticks cn carry all sorts of diseases, Ehlichosis, Rocky mountain spotted fever etc.
They are quite tough and not easy to get rid off. this is why I put this one in the washbasin under water to take the picture. I have to admit that for once I killed my subject. But since it is difficult to find a half decent ID photo on the web, I thought it might be an idea to upload it.
EXIF :) Venus 2:1 lens full magnification, it was about 6mm Amblyomma,Amblyomma cajennense,Costa Rica,Fall,Geotagged,Ixodidae,Rocky Mountain spotted fever,tick

1. Eeek! That looks way scarier than the leeches. At least leeches won't burrow under your skin! Posted 9 years ago, modified 8 years ago
2. Hehe - we had no problem with chiggers in Costa Rica (April?) but in the Pantanal in Brazil they were ferocious! We went on a forest walk and whe I got back to our room, I took a shower and even then - my wife picked about 12 off of my legs! Posted 8 years ago
1. Yikes! I got one recently, and the area where it bit took forever to heal. Quite a nuisance. I'll take leeches if given the choice :D Posted 8 years ago
1. Ha, I agree - in the Birdwatching guide to Panama, the author describes poisonous snakes, killer bees, fire ants, and many other dangers . . . but in the end concludes that of all of these, the only real problem is chiggers! They ate me alive once in the Yucatan after only an hour in the forest. Posted 8 years ago
1. You're a birder? If you ever want to plan a trip to Malaysia, let me know. I love sharing our natural bounty :D Posted 8 years ago
1. Sounds intriguing - where would you recommend going? Posted 8 years ago
1. Fraser's Hill for highland birds, some National Parks for lowland birds. FRIM if you're in KL for a short stay... The list is rather long :) Posted 8 years ago
3. argh... you guys are making me itch and be really, really, really glad I live up here in the benign Pacific Northwest where we have no poisonous snakes, no poisonous spiders, no leeches, no chiggers, no no see ums and relatively few skeeters (at least in the city and I've found an effective repellent for other places..) 1. Oh how boring!! Come over and I'll introduce you to some new 'friends'. :D :D Posted 8 years ago
