could they be an egret and a moorhen?

  1. I think it's a egret and a duck indeed. I tried to find the duck species in my book, but no match for a duck with a head this dark and a white patch on the chest, not sure what it is. Posted 9 years ago
    1. It was quite large, bigger than a mallard, possibly a goose? I found a black duck with a white throat, it's a Swedish Black Duck. It would be very far from home though! Posted 9 years ago
      1. The Swedish duck does look alike, but indeed it is very unlikely given the distribution. My book lists only two geese, the Egyptian Goose and the Pygmee Goose, and both don't look like this. Quite a mystery :) Posted 9 years ago
        1. Maybe just a mutation! Posted 9 years ago
  2. It's a hybrid mallard with domestic ancestry. You can find birds with that kind of patterning wherever escaped domestic mallards have bred with wild ones.
As for egrets, only cattle egrets occur on Mauritius, where they seem to be rather rare, so nice find!
