    I assume these are Aphis carduella.

    1. that's a pretty useful site - thanks! A. carduella sure does look good for the ones I found. Poking around at the reference sites, I've found that we appear to have an aphid expert right up here in my area. He posts to BugGuide, so maybe he'll see my ID request and confirm that, but as long as I got the host plant right, and I'm pretty sure it was balsam - I remember thinking to myself that the aphids probably weren't doing much harm since the blossoming was over, I'd say it's a match.
