Papilio Memnon - Great Mormon male This is a fairly common pap at my location. The male is distinctive in its lack of adornment, but still a beautiful creature, showing great texture in his wings.<br /> <br /> As with all paps, difficult to get a decent photograph.<br /> <br /> Location is Bandung, West Java, Indonesia. This is how the Mormon butterfly gets its name, as the Mormon is permitted to have many wives, so it seems that the Mormon butterfly too has many wives.<br /> <br /> This is one version of the great Mormon female that I see, but even here, you can see some slight variations.<br /> <br /> Location is Bandung, West Java, Indonesia.     A great photo! The polymorphic females give the impression of polygamy, therefore the reference to mormon religion which was once infamous for polygamy. Posted 9 years ago

The Great Mormon

"Papilio memnon", the great Mormon, is a large butterfly native to southern Asia that belongs to the swallowtail family. It is widely distributed and has thirteen subspecies. The female is polymorphic and with mimetic forms.
